Essential Oils a Gift of the Earth

Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from plants. They can be beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the aroma of a freshly sliced orange, or walked past a field of Lavender, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils.
Essential oils do more than just smell good though, they have been used throughout history for their natural healing properties.  In today’s society, with trends towards a more holistic approach to wellness, there seems to be a revival and new discovery of the benefits of essential oils and their many different health applications.
So, how do you use essential oils?  Basically, there are three common ways to enjoy the benefits and therapeutic quality of essential oils.
Aromatically – The simple act of inhaling an essential oil can bring immediate results.  Diffusing essentials oils into the air can also get rid of unwanted      odors and purify the air of some airborne pathogens.
Topically - Essential oils are easily absorbed into the body through the skin, and can safely be applied topically.  There are some oils that are warmer than others though, and should be mixed           with a carrier oil to avoid irritation to the skin. With essential oils, less is always more, you only need a few drops to achieve the desired results.
Internally – Essential oils can be used as dietary supplements to support a variety of health issues, and can also be used in some of your favorite recipes. There are many essential oils that have been determined to be generally regarded as safe (GRAS) and can be taken internally, but there are also some that should never be ingested.  Never ingest an essential oil that does not have a supplement fact sheet on the label.
When considering the quality of essential oil, you always want to make sure you get an oil that is guaranteed to be 100% pure and natural and free of synthetic compounds or contaminates. With that being said, even though the label may say 100% pure, it is not always the case.  Do your homework, and really look into the company that is marketing the essential oil.  What kind of independent testing do they do to make sure their oils are pure?  Where do they source their oils? Also keep in mind that a higher quality therapeutic grade oil is going to cost a bit more than a perfume quality oil.
The following are a few basic oils that can safely be used to take care of your everyday health and wellness needs:
Lavender – for all things calming. Diffuse or apply topically to calm anxiety and soothe emotions. It can also be applied topically to soothe irritated skin and lips. It can be especially helpful for calming reactions to bee stings or bug bites.
Peppermint – to cool and invigorate. Use with Lemon in water for a healthy, refreshing mouth rinse. Inhale deeply to invigorate lungs and increase alertness, or calm an upset stomach. Add to water in a spray bottle and mist body when overheated. Apply          to neck and forehead with Lavender to calm a headache.
Oregano – natural immune support. Take several drops in an empty gelatin capsule for periodic immune support. Dilute and apply to bottom of feet of kids and adults as a natural defense. Use internally as part of a monthly cleansing regimen for GI health.
Lemon – to clean and freshen. Add a drop to honey to soothe a dry or sore throat. Diffuse in a room to neutralize odors and elevate mood. Use to clean kitchen counters and stainless steel appliances. Lemon can also be taken internally with water as an antioxidant and detoxifier.
Melaleuca – first aid for the skin. Apply to skin blemishes and rashes as part of a daily cleansing program. Use with shampoo or conditioner for healthy scalp and hair. Apply to feet and toenails after showering, swimming, or working out.
Frankincense – exclusive oil from Oman. Use to clean and dress minor cuts and sores. Use with a carrier oil for beautiful, radiant skin. Apply to bottom of the feet or use internally to support immune function. Use with Lavender and Peppermint to calm stress and headaches.
doTERRA’s Family Physician Kit is the perfect way to take care of all your health needs.  It comes with each of the 6 single oils listed above, and also includes 4 essential oil blends.
Breathe – for anything respiratory
OnGuard – a protective blend to help boost the immune system
Deep Blue - a soothing blend to alleviate pain and reduce soreness
DigestZen – to improve, balance, and soothe the digestive system.

Middle Age

So,  I believe I am now officially middle aged, and now I think I understand why they call it "middle age".  It's not because you are in the middle of your life, it's because your life is now all about how to get rid of your middle.  So very depressing.

Lucky for me there is a cable channel called Fit TV.  I record a few of the programs and then exercise at my leisure (except I think my leisure is what got me into this problem in the first place)  Here are a few of my favorites.

Namaste Yoga - a very gentle and dynamic style of "Hatha Vinyasa" Yoga.  Each episode is a different unique flow sequence.  I love it because it's a good workout, but it is also very grounding.  When I just want something non- cardio, this is my first choice.

Total Body Sculpt with Gilad & Bodies in Motion with Gilad - Bodies In Motion is great for beginners.  It is "old time" aerobics (filmed back in the 80's) but it's a nice gentle workout.  Body Sculpt is a little updated and a great toning workout using weights.  My kids always make fun of me when I'm "working out with Gilad"!

Core Fusion - this is an intense workout for your core muscles.  A lot of the moves are done holding on to a chair with small isometric movements.  I like that they stretch in between each series of exercises.  You will most definitely feel this one the next day.

However, I have to admit, my most fun and intense workouts can not be found on Fit TV, they are on CD's.  Yes, I have discovered ZUMBA, and I absolutely love it! It's a great workout, but because you are dancing, it doesn't even seem like a workout, it's just fun!  I highly recommend it.  You can also go to live Zumba classes at many gyms and dance studios in your area.  I'm not quite brave enough to do that yet.  It's one thing to dance around my family room shaking body parts that really should not be shook at my age, but it's quite another to do it in public.

So, if you are middle aged, or just worried about your middle, just get up off the couch and get moving.  Start slow and work your way up to something a little more intense.  It'll be good for you.
